Life in the Fish Bowl

welcome

Another Great Day

I think I've mentioned before that I am a member of a local Moms group. It is really the best group ever. A few weeks ago we had a play date with a Mom and her two little boys and we had such a great time. You know what that means right? I didn't have to kill Punkin before it was time to leave. And he tried to kill no one while we were there! Hallelujah!!!!

Actually, before I even realized it we had stayed an hour or so longer than I had planned, but both Punkin and I had a great time. It's nice to finally have some local mom friends and it is so great that Punkin has some kids to play with. He is so used to adults that the kid time is really valuable to us. Plus real live adult conversation? Without having to type? How cool is that?!?!?

A few pics from that dayThose green things in Punkin's hands? Monkeys. To quote him "his monkeys". We returned a week or so later for a birthday party and we were talking about it on the way there. I pointed out that it would be a Little Einstein party and that he'd have kids to play with.

His comment?

"And my monkeys".

One thing about it, no one can ever say my kid isn't consistent! Oh, and guess what he wants to be when he grows up? A zoo!! He really means a zoo keeper, but it is pretty cute when he says he wants to be the zoo.

And to wrap up this post, may I say HELL YEAH!!! The last day of NoMoBloMe. Now I can go back to posting daily, or not, without feeling any pressure. Oh, yes, definitely HELL YEAH!!!

NoMoBloMe Day 29

One more day. I think the pressure of posting daily - even though I normally post daily - is too much. Does this count as a post? Of course it does! It consists of words doesn't it?

My house is nearly clean, my bathroom is still a piece of crap, and I am too sleepy to post. I have memes to do, awards to pass along, play dates to talk about, but all I can think about is my pillow.

And I'm watching ER. Luca is so hot. Ok, goodnight. My mother is coming up tomorrow to buy my Christmas presents so I must go rest.

It Was a Good Day

Today Punkin and I made our first attempt at Christmas pictures. Of course it was at WalHell, so I guess I got my money's worth! You do get quite a few pictures for $10, even though the photographers leave a bit to be asked for. Punkin held up pretty well, though we only got one shot. Last year? We got one shot - on our third visit!!!

Tonight we went to the Galleria to see Santa. Last year this was also a fiasco of gigantic proportions. We had to wait in line. Punkin didn't want to and neither did I. Then when we finally got his grouchy little butt up to see Santa he went ape shit. Crazy. Plus Santa and his elves were about as grouchy as we were which didn't help matters much. We ended up not even buying a photo.

This year was a different story all together. Hubby went with us so they rode the escalator and looked at the Christmas decorations while I waited in line for thirty minutes. Punkin actually sat on Santa's lap, told him what he wanted for Christmas and gave us a great big smile for the camera! Afterwards we ate in the food court and picked out a Christmas ornament.

We had a great time. He rode the carousel three times - another first as he usually has a breakdown when we just get near one - and would have stayed on it all night if we had let him. On the way home he said "Mommy, I had SOOOO much fun!!!".

I just want to know where this grown up little man came from and where my little boy went? This whole growing up thing? It's happening way too fast to suit me.

Y'all check out my little man. Occasionally he is as sweet as he looks!

Pick Me! Pick Me!

The rockin' Devilish Southern Bell has tagged me for a meme. Like her, I know I have others I need to catch up on and awards I need to pass along, but this is quick and easy and will satisfy my NoMoBloMe commitment for today so hear goes.

The rules are:

1.) State the name of your blog, your real name or your online name, and link to your "about me" page.
2.) Say you want to be profiled on BlogHer as a family blogger and link back to this Me and Mine 100 original post.
3.) Tell how long you've been blogging.
4.) Pass this meme on to three other bloggers that you think should be profiled/interviewed, and ask them to do the meme. (Kindly link to the bloggers you select.)

+++++

1) I'm Blue Momma of Life in the Fish Bowl, of course. The one and only. Well, I think I'm the one and only and you probably hope I'm the one and only. You can hear me go on and on about myself read all about me here and here. Why did I just link to myself up there? I guess not only am I a blogaholic, I'm also a linkaholic.
2) I'd love to be profiled as part of the Me and Mine 100 original post :)
3) I've been blogging at this site since April of this year, but my first few posts were copied over from my MySpace blog, which I no longer post to.
4) I'd like to see Catwoman, AAF, Cathy, Daily Diatribes and That Chick get profiled on BlogHer and of course, do the meme.

Fun Monday

So I'm the host for this week's Fun Monday. I wanted to see your unfinished projects, so I guess I better show you a few of mine. Which is easy because it seems I rarely finish anything these days.

Back in March I bought new furniture for my sons room. I rushed to paint his walls so that everything would be ready when the furniture was delivered. That was March. This is today:Still no trim, though you have that lovely, ragged blue band left over from the previous paint. At least I have purchased and painted, if not installed, the moldingBefore I ever started on Punkin's room I started working on my hall bathroom. I'm not crazy about wall paper, especially when it is peeling at every seam. I stripped my 17x20 bedroom in Michigan with no problems, so this room should have been a breeze. Wrong.

Whoever built this house didn't paint/seal the sheet rock before they put up the wallpaper. Needless to say the stripping was/will be a major pain in the ass. Then there is the mudding/sanding/sealing which needs to take place before the paint can be applied. I'm having my Moms group Dirty Santa party here on the 6th, so I damn well better have some after pics by then.

Anyway, here it is in all its gloryNow go visit everyone else and don't forget that Robinella will be our host next week. There are 51 of us participating this week so you better get moving!!!

The Lights are Finally Up!!

Finally. The lights are up. My arms are scratched, my nerves are shot, but the tree is lit, decorated, and collecting dust. I still have to do the rest of the Christmas decorating (though the tree is the bulk of it), but the hard part is done. I still have to hide the electrical cords, wrap the presents, and rehang the ornaments Punkin "helped" me with, but yahoo! The lights are up.

Now I need to go do my Fun Monday post and go help Hubby get Punkin to sleep. Some things I guess Mommy is just better at....

NoMoBloMe Day 24

  • It's day 24 of this posting everyday thing and I need a break.
  • My lights are still not on my tree, though they are all over my living room floor.
  • Punkin is at my mother's house, Hubby got called in to work, and I just had a 2 hour whirlpool bath. Life is good.
  • Fun Monday will be easy this week because 1) it was my idea and I'm all about easy 2) it would be harder for me to find a finished project around here than an unfinished one.
  • My bloglines are marked all read and I feel relieved, yet like I'm missing out on something.

Haiku Friday

Haiku Friday
58 degrees.
I'm all about cold weather,
But not in my house.

If I was so smart
I'd have turned the heater on.
Just call me dumb ass.

The heat is pumping,
This blanket is snugly warm
Punkin still snoozes.

Fa la la la la
The Christmas season is here
I love, love, love it!

A week clean and dry!
Yes! After all of this time
Punkin gets his tracks.

Potty training bribe
Sitting in my living room
Since August. Unused.

Now no poop, no pee
Except in the proper place
For seven whole days!

He gets his new tracks
I can decorate the tree
They'll keep him busy!

Oh, Thomas! You rock!
Henry, Edward, James, Murdoch,
He loves you all so!

Now The Countdown to Santa Begins!!!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! We went to my mother's and had a surprisingly drama free day. Of course we all ate too much and then napped too long, but it was a good day.

It is day 22 of NaBloPoMo and today is the first day I've been tempted to just phone one in, if you know what I mean.

But in the spirit of Thanksgiving - and since every other blogger on planet earth did it, too - I'll tell you a few things I'm thankful for. I know you've just been dieing to know!

I'm thankful for my Punkin. He has brought so much to my life and - to quote M - completed me in ways I didn't know needed completing. He is the light in my life and I love him beyond all expression. I've never felt so loved or so needed or had someone so glad to see me walk in a room in my life. He rocks.I'm thankful for my husband. I know I complain about him a lot, but he works really hard so that I can stay home with Punkin. I'm thankful that we seem to be getting along much better just recently and that maybe the "rough patch" is passing. He is patient beyond imagination (I wouldn't put up with me) and even if I often say he doesn't do enough, he does way more than I could really hope for.

I'm thankful that we have a nice home to live in. I complain about it, too (damn! I bitch a lot don't I?), but compared to the hallway duplex apartment we started out in or the trailer we were so glad to move up to, we are now living the high life.

I'm thankful for my friends - both old and new, ones I've met in person and ones I only know online. Honestly, I often spend more time with you online friends than I do with the other ones. But you all are great and I appreciate that you've taken the time to share your lives with me and to be a part of mine.

I'm thankful that I still have three of my cats, though I miss the ones who have departed greatly. We are all big animal lovers in the Blue house and we've been lucky enough to have had more than our share of great, outstanding, wonderful pets.

I'm thankful that NaBloPoMo is almost over and that I'll actually be able to stay somewhat caught up on my blog reading. You guys are killing me. I'm thankful that when I ordered the replacement cord for my laptop I had the foresight to order a spare. Because a few weeks ago? Hubby had an encounter with the replacement.I'm thankful for lots of other stuff, too, like wireless internet, plus size departments, Kraft 2% Pepperjack, etc, etc, but I won't bore you with any more. Go now. Start getting ready for Christmas and if you do a really cool post and I don't comment? Let me know, ok? Cause that whole "mark all read" thing? It's so happening tonight!

Wordless Wednesday - My Baby

Bad Influences...or Not?

My mother is always worried about us influencing Punkin negatively. We say pee pee instead of tee tee. Wrong. We say turd. Wrong. We all kinds of things that she thinks are wrong, wrong, wrong.

So when he's at her house it is strictly G rated. She takes him to church, they only watch the Disney Channel and dvds. But guess what? You never know what kind of influence that "good" influence may be.

Punkin has been having some issues at MDO. This past week we moved him up to the "big kids" room. He was the youngest in his old class by a day or so and is the youngest in the new class by 6 months. I think he'll do fine as do the directors. His size and verbal ability is equal to or surpasses quite a few of the kids in the class so we thought things would go smoothly.

That's what I get for thinking.

Punkin has never been a biter. He's been bitten, but was never the biter. Until this week. He tried to bite on Monday, but they caught him before any damage was done. When I asked him why he was biting he said he was a rat.

A rat??

I just brushed it aside and told him he wasn't to bite. So the next day? Jumps on some little chick and bites the crap out of her!!! This time we get into a much more detailed discussion about the problem with biting. Plus he got no Bug Juice or pretzels, which was the cause of much distress for him. I ask him if the little girl cried and he said yes and that it made him very sad. I asked him why he was biting.

He said he was a rat.

WTF?????? Then I remember. When we were at my mother's on Sunday he was watching a Care Bears Christmas video. Yes, Care Bears. And guess who the Care Bears nemesis was?

RATS!!! Long toothed, evil looking rats.

Of course, I immediately called my mother and pointed out that not I, but she was the negative influence and she had to agree. I have to admit, I never thought my mother and the damn Care Bears would be the downfall of my child. But shit happens, right?

Yet, of course hubby helps out a bit with the influencing and it always seems to be in a way I find, well, rather retarded.

When I made the connection between the biting rat and the Care Bears, the following conversation ensued:

Punkin, the rats are the bad guys. You want to be a good guy, one of the Care Bears.

No, I'm a rat!

Don't you want to be a good guy?

I wanna be Pinky and The Brain!!

I'll be Pinky and you be The Brain!!!

(gasp, laugh, chuckle)

Ok, I guess if we have to be Pinky and The Brain, I'd rather be The Brain. But really? We have to have a talk with Daddy about the tv.

Obviously I didn't share Punkin's new viewing habit with Nana, not that she'd know what it was anyway. Daddy got a lecture about making Punkin smarter, not dumber, and was reminded that under NO circumstances were they to be watching South Park together.

Men. Grandparents. Toddlers.

Can someone just shoot me now????

Fun Monday - You Show Me Yours.....

This is my first time hosting Fun Monday. Hopefully it will be fun. It definitely will be Monday.

I have a three year old son. As people like to put it he is "all boy". Thus, while chasing after him I tend to start things and never finish them. Or, at the very least, he is a convenient excuse for my lack of follow through.

I was thinking of hosting a show us your boobs Fun Monday, however several people specifically requested that I not. So as much as I truly wanted to see yours Willowtree, I'm gonna go with my second choice.

I want you to show me your......projects. More to the point, I want to see your unfinished projects. I have so many that I really need some reassurance that I'm not the only one. Home improvement projects are what I have in mind, but it you don't have any of those show me any kind of project - needlework, cooking, scrapbooking, etc. You can even show me your spouse if they qualify as a work in process.

And please, I WANT PICTURES!!!! You can talk if you want, but you don't have to. I know since you are all bloggers talk is bound to happen, but I most definitely want to see photos of those unfinished projects.

Ok, folks, have fun and enjoy one you don't have to think about too much!

The following people bravely signed up without knowing whether showing flesh would be required, so bravo to them. Or they could just be exhibitionists. What do yall think??

Oh, and if you want to be added to the list, let me know in a wonderfully complimentary comment.

Fun Monday

Karisma is our hostess for Fun Monday this week. And, here's the task:
"I want you to take a trip down memory lane, and keep right on going, right back to your childhood. And I want to hear "THAT STORY". You remember the one? Yes, you do! The one your parents, siblings, extended family or friends, would never let you forget, live down or get over!"
I have to tell a story that my mother has told many times, but that I don't really remember as I was too young. Still, I've heard it so many times that it really is like a memory for me. Or even better, maybe my story is the story of my mother telling the story. Phewwwww..... that was a lot of story, huh?

Anyway, I was a little kid, three or four years old. I had tons of Little Golden Books. In fact, I still have those very Little Golden Books. But that is beside the point. I had these Little Golden Books and they were scattered all over the floor. My mother told me to pick them up.

I said no.

She told me again. I said no. This went on and on and she finally gives me a spanking.

I still wouldn't pick up the books.

My father came home from work. He tells me to pick up the books. One guess what I said. The same routine is played out again, only this time with my father.

Finally, they both are crying because I am such a little shit. I guess to this day those books would still be in the floor unless one of them picked them up. I don't remember who picked them up as that wasn't the pertinent part of the story, though I assume my mother did it as my father would know less about cleaning up than a three year old did.

This story comes up quite often when my mother thinks I am being stubborn or not listening. She seeks to shame me with it, but she fails.

I'm stubborn. I don't like to be told what to do. Who does? I deal with the consequences of that, both positive and negative, every day and my parents can have a clear conscience that they did their best to "straighten me out".

I guess they failed. But again, I'm ok with that.

Ok, go visit the other Fun Monday participants. Not that I would ever try to tell you what to do.......

Oh, and I'm hosting Fun Monday next week, so look for a post in the next day or so with your assignment. Comment to let me know if you want to participate and get your cameras ready.

Just When You Think You Know Someone....

Hubby and I have had our moments the past year. Or not had our moments, depending on how you want to look at it. We've had a lot going on, a lot of changes in our lives and a lot of adjustments which we've adjusted to with varying levels of success.

I had a pretty bad day this past week. All of life just seemed to fall on top of me last Tuesday. It also didn't help that my head was about to explode and that I couldn't breathe through my nose. At all. I am SO not a mouth breather. Anyway, it was pretty bad.

Hubby, well, was oblivious to my distress. When I told him I was having a crappy day (he was on his way home from work) he offered to buy me pizza. Pizza. I need a head amputation, not a damn pizza.

Later that evening we had a long discussion about how I've been/was/am feeling. Of course I figured it was just like always, in one ear and out the other. I mean that is how it usually is.

But since then he's been trying. So I've been trying. Which, this year, is something new for both of us. I've thanked him for things and he's thanked me. Again, new for us as of late. Yesterday he was offering to help with the clothes and I suggested that if he wanted to help he could do our floors.

We have hardwood floors in our dining room/living room/foyer and they haven't been stripped and polished since this time last year. I know, I suck at house cleaning. And the last time they were done? He did it. So he says ok, that he would start on them that evening.

Punkin and I slept in the basement so we were out of the way and then got up and went to my mother's today so that he could finish the job. I called later this evening to see how things were going and to find out what time we should come home (I was going to cook dinner, of course. No, seriously, I was).

He was kind of snappy, the call was short, and we headed home.

When we drove in front of our house Punkin said "It's Christmas! It's Christmas!". I reminded him that it wasn't yet and we went into the house. As we entered it became apparent that hubby had dragged out all of the Christmas stuff. I had suggested that he might do it as I was planning to get a head start on decorating in the coming week.

When I left home this morning, my living room looked something like this, but maybe a little worseWhen I came home it looked like thisHubby had put the tree together! Y'all don't know it, but I despise putting the tree together. Though this is a new tree and it comes in three sections, it still sucks ass to put it together. He even started putting the lights on it. And lights? My second least favorite thing about Christmas trees. It's a wee bit early, but hey, I don't have to put the freaking tree up!

YAY HUBBY!

It just proves that no matter how well you think you know someone after 15 years, they can still surprise you.

Now? He's putting lights on Punkin's Christmas tree in the basement, as I am typing this. My Punkin's tree and all it's decorations? Bought last year at WalMart for 75% off. It will be so ghetto fabulous!!!

So for today, and hopefully for a while and even forever? Hubby rocks. And I love him.

Not That Kind of Poo Poo

I got Patches from my vet. I was looking for a kitten, not a five year old cat. I wanted a calico kitten, not a snow white cat. But then I saw him and it was love at first sight.

We lived at college together, then we moved back to my parents for a while. When I was 25 we moved back out for good and I rented a little old house while attending my first (and only) year of grad school.Patches was my baby, my confidant, my friend. He met me at the door when I came home in the evening, he snuggled up with me on the couch. He shared my dinner (no it isn't gross and we didn't eat on the same plate! Not often anyway) and he slept with me at night.

Then one afternoon he went missing. I checked all of my rooms. I checked in the yard. I called his name. I screamed his name. I meowed for him. Yes, I said meow. There's something about the tone of my voice, because if I go out in my yard and meow? Cats will come. Kind of like field of dreams. If you meow, they will come.

Still no Patches. I went back inside. I checked inside all of my cabinets and under the furniture. I check the crawl space under the house. No Patches. I was a wreck. I cried, I called him some more, but still no Patches.

Finally I collapse on the couch to cry over my poor missing cat. Then I hear something and it wasn't something good. A rustling sound was coming from my fireplace. IN my fireplace. The chimney, to be more exact.

Yes, you guessed it. Or if you were one of my commenters the other day I've probably already told you.

It was Patches! My formerly snow white kitty. I didn't know whether to hug him or kill him!! What I did was wash him. Over and over and over. He wasn't happy, but then again, neither was I. I got most of the soot out and the rest wore off over time.

Once I met my hubby he became as attached to Patches as I was. Somehow he ended up calling him Poo Poo. I pointed out to him that he was calling our cat poop, but the name still stuck. I had Patches until he was 19 years old and I finally had to have him put to sleep. I must say he was the best companion ever. Sorry Hubby, but I never had to pick his dirty socks up out of the floor. And yes, he did shed, but so do you!!!

Thursday Thirteen #8 - 13 TV Shows I Can't Miss

Thirteen TV Shows I Can't Miss
or
Oh, How I Love My DVR

Obviously I watch way too much tv if there are thirteen show I can't miss. My name is Blue Momma and I am a tv/blog/internet/cat/salsa and chips addict. Please, don't hold it against me.

In no particular order and that most of these shows have a bit of eye candy is a total coincidence:
  1. Bones - Such a cool show. And Angel is in it. If I can't have Spike, I'll settle for Angel. And I know that's not his real name, but who cares about his real name?? H.O.T. Plus the show is great.
  2. House - Who thought a total asshole could be so intriguing? I'd let house slander me any day, because I know in the end he'd make everything OK. And Dr. Chase? He could stand by my bedside anytime he wants.
  3. Criminal Minds - Even though one of my faves, Mandy Patinkin, left the show, this season has been really good. And tonight Garcia got shot! And my DVR, who obviously doesn't like me as much as I like it, cut off before the previews. Damn technology.
  4. Two and a Half Men - I'm not big into comedy, but this show rocks. I love Charlie Sheen's character and that damn kid is hilarious. Hilarious, but please God, don't let my kid turn out like that!
  5. Heroes - What's up with Skylar? And did Peter bulk up a bit over the summer or what? I really get into the whole super powers thing, but after watching this show I just don't think I'd tell anyone I had them. Shhhh. I don't have any. Really.
  6. Smallville - It's about Superman. Everyone loves Superman, right? And is he ever hot, hot, hot. Especially when the red kryptonite comes out and he turns into evil Clark. OMG. Evil Clark is mega hot. What is it with me and the evil guys? Because I am so into them.
  7. ER - I think this show has been on since I was 12. Well, maybe not that long, but long enough that it feels like part of the family. Even though the characters come and go it still rocks. But Abby, what's up, girl? You cheat on Luka? I'm sorry, but there's just not enough alcohol in the world to make me mess that sweet situation up!
  8. Boston Legal - Denny Crane, Denny Crane. This is the quirkiest show on tv. And I so love it. I used to have such a crush on James Spader back in the 80's, though like me he has "bulked up" a bit since then. And not like Peter from Heroes.
  9. Project Runway - If I was fashionable and male and gay and hot, oh, and if I lived in Massachusetts I would so marry Tim Gunn. He is so cool. Or if not marry him I'd at least stalk him. Again, shhhh. Don't tell. The first episode of Season Four was on tonight and I must admit, I wasn't blown away. But Tim? Still my silver fox. I have high hopes for next week. Let the bitchiness begin!
  10. Nip/Tuck - Again. Hot. Hot. Hot. Then some more hot. Remember Julian McMahon when he was Cole on Charmed? Hot. And evil. Now he's just hot and bad. And is it just me, or has Nip/Tuck gotten much more explicit this season? Basic cable is really pushing the envelope these days. And I like it!
  11. Law and Order: SVU - I'm very into these cop shows. And this is my favorite. The scenarios on the show are so relevant to real life and makes me realize my problems just may not be as bad as I think they are. However, I still flash back to Det. Stabler as Keller on Oz. Plus, they also have Schillinger, Father Mukada and that guy whose name I can't remember, but who the nazis made dress up like a girl for a while. They also used to have Ryan O'Reily, another bad boy. Damn, I miss OZ and HBO on Demand.
  12. The Closer - This is a great cop show with a female lead. She really needs to work on her southern accent, but she is tough and smart and kicks major ass. As I'm writing this 13 I feel like I've said all of this before. Deja vu or did I do this post already? Oh well, I'm on #12 so you'll just have to deal with the rerun.
  13. Top Chef - If I haven't mentioned it before, I'm also a reality tv junkie. And I love Chef Tom. These chefs are as catty as any model or fashion designer and the show kicks ass. I am patiently awaiting the next season. Wonder which will be back first, this or Hell's Kitchen? God, this list could be 33 shows long. I better shut up now and try to get a life.
That's it. See ya next Thursday. For more Thursday Thirteeners with most excellent taste, please visit the links below. And go watch some tv so I don't feel like the only loser glued to the tv set, OK?
