An Evening Out for Punkin and I

Tonight Punkin and I braved the outside world and went to dinner with some friends from my Moms group. We were going to a Mexican restaurant and with Mexican being my favorite I was really looking forward to it. However, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive as Punkin is either an angel or the spawn of Satan when we attempt to eat out.

When we arrived most everyone was already there. We ended up at three round tables which were pushed together, with the kids at one end and the Moms at the other. Now please realize that Punkin has never eaten a meal out where he wasn't sitting next to me or his Daddy. Now? He was a good ten foot away, in a "big boy chair", with a real cup and straw.

This isn't sounding like a recipe for success is it?

Things actually went pretty good, believe it or not. He sat next to a little girl who has the same name as he does! All I could think was what if they got married? Punkin and Punkin Blue. How funny! Anyway, he played in the chips, he punched holes in his cup, he tried to get the others to do the same, but all in all it wasn't too bad.

At one point early in the evening he came running up to my chair and said "thank you, Mama! I'm having great fun!". He was so happy to be there with the other kids. He was just so excited and I was just so bursting with love for my little man.

I did end up putting him in a booster chair. Funny thing is that after that - the little girl wanted one too!! At one point he was holding his arms out to hug her. Like for a minute. Then next thing a see he's giving her a big hug! It was so cute.

He ate his grilled cheese and I ate my nachos and was able to chat with the other Moms. It was so nice to get out and not have to worry too much about him. Of course, by the premature end of the evening he had reached his limit and was starting to act up. I told him to go tell his friends goodbye. So he did.

He ran through the restaurant with his hand over his head, waving to nearly each and every patron there, telling them goodbye. He has many more friends now than he did at the beginning of the evening! So we went back and told his real friends goodbye and left for home.

I was disappointed that the evening ended earlier than I had planned, but then I realized that he made it though 1 1/2 hours at the restaurant and that for a three year old - for MY three year old - that was outstanding! Especially being that he was sitting on his own for the first time. I really just need to chill out and remember that he's just a little kid and that his limits are certainly not the same as mine.

And to enjoy these times when he is learning to socialize and interact with others. Because these times? They truly are great fun.

That sounds like he had the best time. It's quite hard for children to learn to socialise but it sounds as though he did great, you must be a proud mom.

An hour and a half in a resteraunt? I'd say your son deserves a gold star. Cause my daughter? She'd just ask why we weren't eating at "myDonald's."

I agree with Emma, an hour and a half is most certainly gold star material!

It sounds like you had so much fun!

1.5 hours of a good three year old??? Count your blessings. We eat out at 4:45, cause by the time the food rolls out (usually 10 minutes when you're that early), mine's already squirming. And, then you know, when he's eaten his seven bites of whatever, he expects everybody to be finished. PRAISE the child for being so good for so long. Yay, Punkin.

It is a beautiful thing when they behave! Granted mine only does that when all the moons and stars a line to tenth degree.

Morgan's always really good in restaurants. I'm so thankful for that!! We may have to occupy her with the sugar packets or my car keys, but she's good. I hope it stays that way!!

Glad you had a nice time--you certainly deserve it :)

you both rock my world. super impressed and then some.

also. want mexican. even though that would be a BAD idea right now.

also also...I've NEVER heard a girl with your son's name. Did you find out her middle name? If so you'll have to tell me because I'm trying to fit it on a girl and I just cannot do it.

Your story almost brought me to tears (ok, well I'm PMSing too).

Isn't it the COOLEST thing when you realize that your child is an actual little person who is learning the way of the world? My son is almost 8 and I still have those moments.

Love your blog...

That sounds like a fun evening! I would have been so nervous - even with my five year old. I am a nervous nellie like that sometimes.

Give punkin a huge gold star!!!! I know you had a great time. My 8 year old doesn't sit still that long. She won't be quiet that long either.
