Life in the Fish Bowl

My Comments on Comments

Comments. Bane or blessing, as bloggers, we all, or most of us anyway, have to deal with them. I, being quite the comment whore, love to get comments. My toes tingle and the goose bumps rise when that little envelope in my task bar turns blue. A comment? Could it be a comment? Please, please, please?!?

And it usually is a comment, because I set up an email address just for my comments. I want them to feel special, because they are dear to me and I love them. Not that I don't love all five of my readers, but it is your words, your validation of my effort here, that I crave. Sure you blog to inform family about your kids or to hone your writing skills or to change the world. Of course you do. But don't tell me you don't also do it for the the comments.

So comment, people! Tell me you love me or tell me I suck. Tell me your kid is smarter, cuter, funnier, sweeter than mine, even if you are wrong. Tell me your husband rubs your feet and washes the dishes and never tells you that you know what he wants for his birthday. Show. Me. Some. Love!!! Or like. Or flame my ass. It's up to you.

Being I have readers numbering in the thousands hundreds tens ones, I have the ability to respond to most every comment I am left and I would very much like to. So how about adding your email address to your profile? Just go to your profile via the Blogger Dashboard and check Show My Email. Pretty please?

You could even create your own comments address so your guys can feel special, too! And if you do that on Gmail it's even better because I also love Gmail! I love it when I get that email notification and can hit reply - and it goes to a real, live person and not to blogger noreply.

Even if you put your address on your actual blog and write it out - bestblogever at gmail dot com or yousuckandIdont at yahoo dot com- and make me work for it, well, that's ok, too. I get it. You don't like spam. Neither do I. I will go the extra mile for you! 'Cause I love you, remember? Pay attention!

Oh, and if I end up stalking you via email you can always block me. I've been called a lot worse than spam!

So how 'bout it?

Comments are always nice. There are a few ways to can increase them besides ordering people to respond.

1) Rather than reply to comments via email, reply in the comments section itself. There are probably a number of people who may be thinking about commenting, but if they never see you respond in the comments, they may assume that you don't respond, so they won't bother. Plus people who leave comments will often keep coming back to see if you have responded.

2) Get rid of the Word Verification. Most Spam is on older posts anyway, so I just close my comments after 2 weeks.

3) Offer prizes. Bloggers love shiny trinkets. It can be any piece of crap, although if you want to get 1200 comments per contest like Ree does, you need something of value. Personally I think that's too many to deal with, I'm happy with around 30 comments per post.

4) Get out there and leave comments everywhere, particularly on popular sites! You'll always get someone following the link back to you.

Comment: 'My hubby rubs my feet.' I had to say it because I do not think a time will ever come when I can tell this lie again. hee hee

All bloggers love comments, you're just more honest about it than most :) I'm totally a comment whore too!

My man starves me on Fridays! How about that, huh? Huh? HUH? Hah, beat your hubby rubbing you feet. I WIN!

To do him credit though, he is not being evil. It's just that Friday is the most exhausting day for both of us and no one wants to make dinner/drive to get dinner. We usually pop tin spaghetti in the microwave and be done with it. Or toast.

I don't like word verification too but it's necessary if you don't want spam. I'm not sure if my own blog have them because I reply to comment when I'm logged on to my blog...Wordpress automatically block spams with those akismet thing. Now, not advertising or anything. Just sayin', ya know. :p And bragging (I didn't you to be the only one who have the permission to brag, huhuhuhu!).

Now excuse me why I type your word verification.

WT:Ok, I'll bite. Do people really come back to look for replies to their comments? Because that's definitely easier than email. I just figured once you visited an entry you were finished with me. And 1200 comments? I'm sure not in that league. But I do have some crap around here.....

And I wasn't ordering. Just kind of begging or groveling. ;)

YB: Hubby will rub my feet, but then he expects me to reciprocate, or at the very least rub something and I just have way too many unread feeds fort that!

Terri: I'm glad I'm not the only one! But I did wake up this morning and think, maybe I should delete that post....

Glori: Ok, so you win! If I stayed as busy as you there would never be fresh - or even canned - food on the table! And I'm sorry about Clyde. :(

Personally? I don't go back to a post looking to see if a reply was posted to my comment. If I did that, I'd spend the whole damn day re-checking the comment section. Word verification is a huge pain in the arse. But, that's also my opinion :)

I, too, am a comment whore. I love me some comments. I get happy when I hit 20 comments on one post.

Anyway...now that you left ME a comment and I've left you two, I can say for sure that I will now be stalking....uh, reading....your blog every. damn. day. Maybe checking twice per day :)

I love comments too!! Does that make us needy, insecure, self-loathing idiots? Needing the approval of total strangers to make it through another day? Sounds about right!!

Oh, don't even get me started on comments... Because when I get double digit comments I'm on cloud nine. And then if my next post only gets six, then I'm so freaking devastated, that you'd think I lost my dog. Then I start analyzing the entry and thinking "it must have sucked really bad" or "the Internet hates me". Honestly, I don't go back to posts to see if the writer's replied to my comment, but then again, I don't even know how to do the strike out thing everyone else does, so I'm obviously not the knowledgeable one in the bunch. And I've added my email address to my blog, although not the way you told me (which honestly, I didn't know how to do that, you're like my blogger nerd friend, I heart you!) because the one I used to enlist has my real name on it. But just so you have it in your email, my address is catwoman.in.texas at gmail.com (see how I did that?) That's because of you, Yoda.

This is the ten-thousandth time I'm commented - or is it? It's all that "Mum" stuff that's keeping the masses away. I told you so!!!

Awww...Does sum one need sum wuvvin'? =P

I only respond to comments if I have the person's email address. Been meaning to harrass my readers about that.

Thanks for the smiles and giggles.

I usually reply in my comments section, too, but today I emailed you! :) TMI for a comment section! LOL

you are so needy. AND THATS WHY WE LOVE YOU!

I dont have anything to say all productive like...

my husband rubs my feet and washes the dishes...its the power of sex I tell you!!!

You may have a point, people probably don't come back to see of you responded...Oh wait!

Comment whore's unite! Aren't comments what gets out of bed every morning? Or am I the only loser who gets up before the kids just so I can check email first thing?

I used to answer back in my comments but now I only do if there isn't an email. I found that most people don't come back. It's too time consuming. I've never been one to go back to see if my comment got a response. My blogroll is so long that it would be too much work to figure out which blogs and what post I commented on the day before. I'm not crazy about the word verification thingy either. I must be dyslexic because I'm always transposing the numbers and having to redo it a couple of times. Obviously I am not very bright.

WT: What the hell time is it over there anyway? Thanks for coming back! And I so enjoy your blog. Anyone reading this comment, go check him out...

Anon: You got your damn new computer. Open it, log on and get open a friggin' blogger account so you can quit being anonymous!!!! I hope this is the same anon.

Dx: How does Senior Management put up with you? Are you sure she's giving you the new address? You better check it out before you're all packed and ready to go!

Not Afraid: I had to fed ex my reply as it was too large for email!

Hee hee... I love comments too but I never go back and read them....

I just wait for comments on MY blog. Reciprocity! Which you are great at.

Thanks for the blog! It's great!

BTW, can you explain how it can be hotter than it feels???

*sigh of joy*

I love comments. LOVE them. I give. I receive. I love. Period.

I loathe word verification but do it when I read the great words of peeps in blog land. Hell, who am I to complain?

The only thing I WILL complain about tonight...hijack...warning...is that my fucking feet are swelling as if I was pregnant again. I HATE THIS FUCKING HEAT WAVE. FUCK YOU HEAT MIZER! (If I was still a practicing Catholic, I'd have to go to confession for all the f bombs I drop on a daily basis.)

what really really tix me is when say, 150 read your page that day, and 2 left comments. i take it personally too.

i used to get double digit comments on every post when i first started- now it's maybe 4 if i'm lucky.

I am a total comment whore! And, I heart gmail!!!

The only time I go back to see if the person replied in their comments is if I see that they normally do that, otherwise, I don't. I read too many blogs to do that!

Karly said...

Just have to say that I love comments too...but your "people fed my addiction" comment line is THE BEST EVER. So funny!

I'm a Mom!..? said...

Isn't this the reason we all blog? To be judged by total strangers?

No need to respond, I never go back to see if someone responded to my comments, I read too many blogs and would really never get anything done!!!

Jennifer aka Binky Bitch said...

All newish bloggers, well at least me, have written this exact same kind of post.

And look at you with your 23 comments!! Woot!

What is this I hear about gmail and replying back to people? How does it work if someone doesn't check the box to share their email in the profile box?

That Chick Over There said...

I love comments too. And I'm cool with it. :)

I think you have my email addy...it's also on my blog, but it's:

thatchickoverthere@gmail.com

Easy enough, right?

Jennifer said...

I never get enough comments. I need to whine so I'll get more! Y'all come read my blog and comment and I'll read yours and comment and we'll all be happy!

Emma in Canada said...

I tried what you said and it didn't work. My email is on my blog but you actually have to type it out. Use it. I mean it. Though you've got a ton of comments on this one, so mine might get lost in the masses.

I agree with willowtree about responding to comments, I love people who do it, but I suck at it myself. However, I also love email replies. Because then I definitely get them. And I feel speical. Cause I'm a loser like that.

VAIL said...

Comments always make me feel special. They show me people are actually reading what I type. Comments are almost as good as brownies.

Devilish Southern Belle said...

Okay, woman, you get way more comments than I do! I feel pretty much the same way about comments...I do like them, a lot! But feel guilty if I get busy and can't keep up with responding. That's my thing....I like interaction, and bloggers who just ignore their commenters and never attempt to forge bonds with them just seems so strange to me.
